Alumnae Donate Funds for Tour Bus
Alumnae Dr. Myrna Alexander Nickens ’78 and Ms. Marion Tresvant ’78 combined to donate the funds that allowed the college to purchase a tour bus. The 56 passenger vehicle is used to facilitate the transportation needs of athletic programs, concert choir and other ancillary programs.
About the Donors
Myrna Alexander Nickens, MD, ’78, is a interventional cardiologist in Jackson, MS, and has been practicing medicine for 33 years. She received her B.S degree from Tougaloo College in 1978, and M.D. from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, in 1982. She did an internal medicine internship from 1982-83, an internal medicine residency from 1983-85, a cardiology fellowship from 1989-92 and an interventional cardiology fellowship from 1992-93 at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI. Dr. Alexander Nickens joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) as an associate professor of medicine in 2012.
A member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association and the Association of Black Cardiology, Dr. Alexander Nickens is the co-author of four peer-reviewed professional publications. She has an interest in heart disease in women, valvular heart disease and preventive cardiology for all ages above 15 years of age. All patients are welcomed at her practice at UMMC.
Marion McNeil Tresvant, MS ’78, is a biologist, clinical medical scientist, business owner and philanthropist. She has contributed more than a million dollars to the institution and was presented the 2018 Chairman’s Award at the 30th Annual Business Luncheon. Ms. Tresvant is a 1978 graduate of Tougaloo College where she earned a B.S. degree in Biology. She received a M.S. degree in Business Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston in 1993.
Through her donations, the Perry and Annie Lee McNeil Endowed Scholarship was established. The scholarship, named for Tresvant’s parents, seeks to enhance success for deserving students and contributes to the advancement of the next generation of leaders and scholars.
In 1994, Ms. Tresvant established PerryLee Home Health Care, Services, Inc. Ms. Tresvant’s company employs over 450 workers, has locations in nine cities in the state of Texas and provides attendant care to residents in thirteen counties.
Ms. Tresvant was inducted into the Tougaloo College National Association’s Hall of Fame in 2013.
